Gothic Cathedral’s Hidden Beauty

Gothic cathedrals have a unique style that I feel is underrated by many. Some of the things that make them unique are its façade and details. Even if its façade isn’t the prettiestcompared to other architecture styles, they hold a very important role. This role is the reason why its hidden beauty can be held on its inside.

When compared to other architectural styles, gothic architecture seems to be opaqued or shadowed by them. The Renaissance Architecture, for example, is recognized for theproportions, symmetry, and harmony its buildings hold. The designs prioritized beauty and were inspired by Roman and Greek Architecture. Gothic Architecture, on the other hand, emphasized its verticality by making high ceilings, symbolizingthe transcendence to heaven. One of the most famous innovations that were created by this architectural style were the flying buttresses, which allowed the walls to be thinner and filled with enormous stained glass.

Each architectural style contains its beauty. While Renaissance Architecture emphasizes beauty on its façade, Gothic Architecture focuses on its façade’s functionality and necessity. The flying buttresses on gothic cathedrals are necessary to hold the structure because of its height. Because of this, some people might not find Gothic Architecture pretty on the outside, but when they see the inside, it’s a different story. Seeing the light enter through the stained glass and the amountof details these cathedrals hold is impressive and beautiful.

Beauty in architecture is not only perceived by its outside, but also by its interior and the symbolism it holds. Gothic cathedrals might not be the prettiest on the outside, but on the inside, they are beautiful. I even find the flying buttresses beautiful because of their functionality. They make this architectural style even more unique. Just like the famous quote of “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, I would say “Don’t judge a building by its façade”.
